8 ways to improve your employability during Lockdown

Bored of lockdown? Why not learn so new skills that might even help you get a better job or a promotion?


1. Learn a language

There is a multitude of websites and apps which allow you to learn a new language for free, I would recommend: Languagesonline, Memrise (only for vocabulary), Duolingo, Mondly, Babbel. Babbel is the only one you have to pay for, but both Duolingo and Mondly offer premium subscriptions.

2. Learn an instrument

Obviously this is not possible for everyone, but if your one of those people who bought an instrument but never had time to learn how to play it, now is your chance. There are many videos on youtube teaching you how to play a variety of instrument.


3. Write a novel

Many of us have lots of ideas for books but never do anything with them, well now is your chance. Writing a novel can take a long time, especially for new writers, so if you wish to be an author I encourage you to take this opportunity.


4. Learn to code

In our modern society nearly everything is run by computers, therefore being able to code will give make you more useful to employers. There are many websites that offer free courses in coding, some of the best places to start are: Skillshare, Codeacademy, Udemy, freecodecamp, Coursera, EDX.


5. Earn a crest award

This only for students. If you are hoping for a career in STEM then a crest award can be very beneficial as it shows you have the skills to complete a scientific project. There are different levels aimed at different ages, the Gold award is the if you wish to enhance your UCAS application and CV.


6. Complete an online course

There are many websites that offer free online course or courses for a small fee. Websites I would recommend are Coursera (free), EDX, Lynda ($25 per/month), Udemy ($10-$500), Khan Academy (free).


7. Learn to touch type

If you work at a computer learning to type faster and more accurately can speed up your work drastically. Some of the best free courses are TypingWeb, Goodtyping, Peter’s Online typing course, Learn2type, FreeTypingGames.


8. Learn how to use common computer programmes

Being able to use programmes such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Excel, adobe, etc. effectively could increase your chances of being hired drastically.
