Do you have acne? Acne scars? Sensitive skin? Here is a list of my top skincare tips, that I have learnt on my skincare journey so that you can improve your skincare routine and get the perfect, glowing skin you want.
1. Know your skin type
It’s very important to know your skin type when trying to find a skincare routine because most products are designed for a specific skin type. To find your skin type: wash your face, then wait an hour, then examine your face. Use a blotting sheet or a piece of tissue, check how much oil comes off; if there is oil all over you have oily skin, if just your t-zone is oily you have combination skin, and if there is no oil you have dry skin. If your skin feels tight this is an indicator you have dry skin. If your skin looks red or flacks you may have sensitive skin. If you have large pores you probably have oily skin. If you are still unsure ask a dermatologist.
2. Do your research
If you have specific skin concerns or want to start using stronger active ingredients you should defiantly do your research in order to make sure you are using the right active ingredients for your skin concerns.
3. Don’t skip moisturiser
Some people believe that if they have oily skin they don’t need to use moisturiser. ALWAYS use moisturiser; if you don’t use moisturiser your skin will produce more oil to compensate, therefore making your skin more oily.
4. Don’t introduce/use too many products at once
When introducing new products, even if you have patch tested and had no negative reaction, you should still only introduce a new product every 5 days. This way if you have a negative reaction to a product you know which product cause this.
5. Always use SPF
Spf is one of the most important parts of a skincare routine because the UV rays from the sun can cause damage to the skin that can lead to acne, signs of ageing (brown spots, wrinkles, dull skin tone, etc), and even skin cancer. To protect your skin you should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day. You should reapply sunscreen throughout the day to make sure you're protected.
6. Be GENTLE with your skin
This is the most important tip. Even if you don’t have sensitive skin, your skin is still very delicate. Being too ruff with your skin can cause acne, dry flakey skin, redness, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, swelling and inflammation. If you have damaged your skin, I would recommend limiting your skincare routine to the basics: Cleanser, Moisturiser, and SPF. You can also try eating: vitamin C rich foods (essential for the production of collagen), more protein (Key for rebuilding cells), Foods with zinc (aids in synthesiser protein). Cutting out junk food and regular exercise can also help.
